Why the Low GI Diet Works for Weight Loss
October 20, 2008
The Food and Agriculture Association of the United Nations states that industrialized countries base their diets on low glycemic foods in order to prevent the most common diseases of influence such as; coronary heart disease, diabetes and obesity. Eating low glycemic is not only great for weight loss, but for overall heart health it is the best.
I even have my children eating low glycemic. Low G.I. eating is important because it keeps your body in the fat burning zone. Examples of low G.I. foods are beans, low sugar fruits like apples and meats. Most of our foods turn high glycemic by the way they are processed. Items that contain white flour like pasta and white bread and anything made with refined sugars (donuts) are high glycemic. Processing many of our foods has taken out nutrients and the necessary fiber we need for heart health and gastrointestinal health.
The adapting a low glycemic eating habit works best, because it will help you control your blood sugar level. It decreases hunger and increase satiety (feeling full or satisfied). Before I started eating low GI, I would joke that I had no satiety. I was hungry every hour. Personal trainers would tell me that it was good that I was hungry all the time. They said it meant that I had a high metabolism. I told them it was not working for me. Personal trainers do understand exercise, but many of the young ones don’t understand how the body works. I was constantly eating high GI process foods, but because it was low fat they thought I was fine.

Who survived the liquid diet?
October 8, 2008
I lasted two hours on Slim-fast. I think it made me hungry. I was ready to eat a half of cow. I did not realize what was in the drink and why I was so hungry. It was not good that I was lactose intolerant too. There are people who successfully lost weight on liquid diets. The most famous was Oprah. My sister did well on the liquid diet also. I really applaud their discipline. They did all the rights things. They did not fail the diet, the diet failed them.
Meal replacement diets set everyone up for long-term failure. It is more severe than calorie restriction. Ninety-five percent gain back the weight in one year. Ninety-seven percent gain back the weight in two years. It is an unsuccessful quick fix. Most of the weight loss is muscle, so you end up will a lower weight and a higher body fat percentage. Since it cannot be done long-term, the weight gained back is generally fat instead of muscle.
Most meal replacements are filled with vitamins. Unfortunately it is not nutritionally balanced. They are also filled with a lot of sugar. Punishing yourself with these meal replacements is not worth the fatigue and hunger that come with it. I am not against all shake products, but I am against using them as meal replacements.

Fat Factor #4 Garbage In
September 29, 2008
I am a busy mother of two. I am fortunate that I work from home. Many parents have two people working outside of the home. After working all day, it is so easy to grab a bucket of chicken or order pizza. Eating garbage has become a part of our lifestyle, because it is easy. Think about it… it is easier to shove a Snicker’s bar in the face of a screaming child then to drop everything to handle the child’s need.
I have another confession. I love sugar. I blame my mom. She is the queen of the sweet tooth, but her metabolism carried her well into her forties. I also passed my sweet passion to my nine year old daughter. I am grateful that she loves fruits and drinks plenty of water. I have learned that you can change your palette, so you don’t crave sweets.
Eating junk food occaisionally is not what makes us fat. It is the overeating of the wrong kinds of foods with too much sugar, fat, synthetic chemicals and too few nutrients. Many of the chemicals in our food cause us to overeat and interfere with our bodies ability to know it is full. Are you a junk food junkie?

Fat Factor #3 Sendentary Lifestyle
Technology is great. It has made us more efficient. Unfortunately technology has made us lazy. We work on the computer all day, then come home and entertain ourselves by watching television the rest of the evening. When America went from a manufacturing country to a service industry nation, our activity level was greatly reduced.
When I was a kid, I could ride my bike by myself and walk to the community swimming pool. I did not worry about being kidnapped or killed. Activity was natural for every child. Today, if you want your child to be active, you have to put them in planned athletic activities which cost money and take time.
I don’t think we planned this to happen, it just happened. If you want to win the battle of the bulge you have to “move your mass”. If you don’t purpose to get moving, then you are putting yourself at risk for obseity. You can start with baby steps. A walk around the park or ditch the cart if you play golf.
I was so frusted with my weight, I decided to join a club and I aggressively started working out. I ended up with a back and wrist injury. If you have not worked out for a while, make sure you check with a doctor and get with a fitness professional. My injury kept me from working out for a while. Remember slow and stead can produce great results. You can always increase as your body adjust to the new you.
